day 5
we set off to venice at 8am on day 5. it was a damn long journey from florence and we arrived there at like 12pm. we took a boat to the floating island. it was exactly as i had expected, the canals and the gondolas and the grand canal and everything. (however, the water was a bit smelly, something that no travel book will tell you)
on the boat to the island.we went to this murano glass factory. the quality of the glass is damn good. it's world famous. the glass stuff were all handmade. the glass masters are so pro, they can make the glass cups have pitches. for example, tap the glasses and they'll have different sounds. there's this glass that changes colour under different lighting!!! saw a pro at work, and he made a beautiful vase in seconds. we oooh-ed and aaah-ed as he blew into the long tube and the melted glass expanded like a balloon. the glass was damn hot, it was liquid. but it cooled down damn fast outside the furnace. walau, i really can't describe how they did it, it's just magic.
we went into their warehouse or whatever you call it. we werent allowed to take pictures. the room was brightly lighted and the glassware on the shelves were damn colourful. there were sculptures of birds and people, all made of glass. everything was made of glass. so cool! i love it. and there's a larger-than-life glass horse in the entrance, it's sooooo nice can! ahhhhh
okay, then next was the tour of venice. we went to the st marks square.

do you recognise this tower?
we had a local guide, who introduced us to the church and the bridge of sighs. the church was made of solid marble and was sinking slowly. the mosaic floor was damn uneven.
after that was the long awaited gondola ride. it was... marvellous! the canals and the bridges and everything.. it was hard to believe i was actually there.

some pictures.
the bridge of sighs.had coffee by the street. sipping coffee in a small café in the middle of venice.. something i didnt dare to dream about previously. but now, it had come true. and i was enjoying every minute of it.
while waiting for our travelmates for the boatride back, i wandered about the souvenir stalls and spotted a france flag! despite the price of €7 (s$14), i still bought it. no regrets! later on, in switzerland, i'd wave it with gusto as i watched france beat portugal in the u21 festival in toulon.

our hotel was the holiday inn in padova :D it was the best hotel in the itinery. the tv was philips flat tv and the bed was damn comfortable! everything was state of the art, except that we somehow couldnt flush the toilet. luckily the problem was solved. this little incident shows that looks can be deceiving...
