cruising down memory lane

germany 0 spain 1
and that concludes the 23 day 31 matches 2008 european championships. i had mixed feelings when i switched off the tv after watching casillas lift the trophy... because i know i'll never be able to enjoy these consecutive late night matches for another 2 years. because after today the sports channel subscription will end and and life'll be back to normal and i'll be back to slaving in front of textbooks for the o levels.
well i should look at this in a positive light.
the past 3 weeks had been a cracker. i had never felt so excited when i heard my alarm clocks beep in the middle of the night. yes alarm clocks, 3 of them plus my handphone. me jumping up from bed and dashing outside to tune in to channel 30 for 2 hours of unrivalled bliss. munching biscuits in front of the tv, i could think of nothing but the match and the newspaper reports the next morning and which pictures and articles i would choose for my euro 2008 project.
sitting on my own in the living room in darkness and watching the players slug it out on the pitch, subconsciously i feel myself joining them in their fun and when the camera was trained on a bunch of fans, i took particular amusement in watching them suddenly go crazy when they saw themselves on the big screen. i saw them with their colourful afro wigs waving flags big and small, and i think that one day i'll be one of them.
there were exciting matches, like germany-croatia, netherlands-italy and spain-russia. i didn't watch any group a matches because none of the teams interested me. of course there was the dull time waster in the shape of france-romania, and until now i cannot believe how a football powerhouse can concede 6 goals (worst in the group stages) and score a measly 1. even czech republic, who let in 6 goals, managed to score 4.
i swore silently when kuyt scored against france, and stood in disbelief as van persie made it 3-1 a minute after henry's goal. i shook my hands in fury as france scuffed chance after chance. i raised my hands above my head, an amused look on my face as i watched mario gomez made the miss of the tournament, rivalled only by some dude from croatia against turkey. come to think of it, i rarely made any wild celebrations during the course of this tournament, simply because there wasn't much to celebrate about france. and though i was a mini germany, spain and holland fan during the quarter finals, when they won i did not feel the same euphoria that i felt when france scored (albeit only for one time).
i marvelled at turkey's comeback against croatia and cursed russia when they knocked holland out, because i thought italy would win spain and holland would finish italy off. but that was not to be, and to thank spain for beating italy, i embarked on a project called '1 month spanish', and from 23.6.2008 to 23.7.2008 i'd be learning spanish on my own.
i went absolutely crazy and almost punched the tv screen when the germany-turkey match hanged halfway. my nostrils flared when i watched lahm score the winning goal, wondering how the scoreline got to 2-2 in the 88th minute. but the next match, spain-russia, proved to be a cracker. as i said earlier, i could understand a spanish word on a banner, and not only that my eyes were treated to a brilliant game of football by the spanish, rivalled only by the best team in the world, arsenal.
and after 30 matches and 76 goals and 22 days, the final finally arrived. my eyes were glued to the tv screen, savouring every minute of it, not wanting the match to end. but it did in the end and i was satisfied how the tournament was wrapped up.
we've come to the end of the euros, a fantastic tournament with ups and downs and goals and howlers with the occasional controversy and red card thrown into the mix. i've enjoyed myself tremendously and it is with eager anticipation that i await the next big thing - the 2010 world cup. of course, there is the 2008/09 epl season to look forward to, too :)

about the frenchie and my undying love for france
anyway i went for the lyon SCIP briefing just now. the frogs from lyon and the krauts from giessen are going to some places together. they're going to the singapore flyer and the singapore river, the national history museum, little india and chinatown and kampong glam (smirks) and sentosa, all without us! HAHA they're having a 3 hour 'special chinese lesson' for 3 days (6 for the frogs)!!! lol the french embassy is inviting the frenchies and us for some reception hehe. and and we're going to watch the national day preview! damn, i planned to bring her to marina bay to watch the real one. i also planned to bring her to the flyer and the zoo and everything, turned out the ministry'll bring them there and we can only bring her out on the weekends --"
hoho, my buddy's 18 years old! she has a 13 year old sister
last night's match rocked to the core. not only i understood the meaning of the spanish word on a banner (podemos - we can), i got to watch really beautiful football. spain reminds me of arsenal. right, i might sound like i'm switching to spain but i'm not. i'm just angry at france's performance but i still love them <3 it's unbelievable, how we scored a pathetic 1 goal. maybe we'll do better in the world cup. and that's when domdom resigns/get sacked.

i'm not the only one who missed this match
while watching the germany-turkey match the screen hanged twice, and BECAUSE OF THAT I MISSED 2 GOALS AND THE ENDING OF THE MATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I TRIED SWITCHING TO CHANNEL 01 BUT IT FAILED i also tried the tv3 channel but they were having some shit conversation about the match. then i switched back to ch30 and they said there was a breakdown in reception. before that i was almost dropping to sleep cos i was too tired but now i'm livid. i continued switching channels until tv3 showed the match and i saw lahm's winning goal just in time. and then after the goal the presenters began to talk about the match!!! it was still going on and they have to talk about it now! but it was better than starhub which wasn't showing anything at all.
I AM ABSOLUTELY LIVID THAT I HAD TO MISS SUCH CRUCIAL GOALS AND I DIDN'T GET TO SEE THE EQUALISER IMAGINE HOW ANGRY I WAS WHEN I SAW IT WAS 2-2 AT THE 88TH MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE PAST FEW QUARTER FINALS LACKED SO MANY GOALS AND THIS MATCH HAS TO HAVE 5 GOALS AND I MISSED 2 OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!
YEAH I JUST READ SOCCERNET THEY ALSO HAD SOME BLANKING OF SCREENS AT THEIR SIDE BUT AFTER I WATCHED LAHM'S GOAL ON TV3 I WENT BACK TO CH30 AND THE PICTURES WERE STILL HANGING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! have to be content with watching replays...

romania lost, that was what we were hoping for, but at the rate we were playing, it didn't matter if romania lost 2-0 or 10-8 we were out anyway. i'm not sad actually. i'm in fact relieved. if domdom gets sacked because of this game, it'd have been worth it. (in a close up shot of him i think i saw a little boogy sticking out of his left nostril, haha) and nasri didn't make an impact either, since he was subbed after coming on for ribery (i really hope he's all right). nasri not making an impact is a good thing, because his value'd drop and arsenal can swoop him on the cheap. hehe.
congrats van persie for getting your 2nd. and huntelaar too. if spain fail to beat italy, i hope you netherlands kick their asses. again. a 3-0 will be nice.

euro2008
angry. sad. disappointed.
i was near tears after yesterday night's match. how could france lose by such a huge margin when we were talking about how solid our defence was? what the fuck happened to henry? why did netherlands score immediately our goal, when i was fresh from doing my 10 push ups?? for every french goal i'd do 10 push ups and if france won i'd do 20.
i tell you, i'm thanking mutu profusely for missing his penalty. because if romania won, france would most probably be out.
i did the math last night as i struggled to come into terms with the defeat.
netherlands (6):
gf: 7
ga: 1
gd: 6
romania (2):
gf: 1
ga: 1
gd: 0
france (1):
gf: 1
ga: 4
gd: -3
italy (1):
gf: 1
ga: 4
gd: -3
for france to qualify, romania must lose and france must win. of course we mustn't concede any goals against italy, which is easier said than done, seeing tonight's scoreline. hey, at least italy's attack looked threatening, unlike france. oh man i'm so angry at france's strikers. i fucking don't know what the hell is wrong with our team. the dutch played such flowing football that it's no surprise many arsenal players support netherlands too.
but all is not lost yet. i have faith in the players, and i'll definitely be supporting them in the match against italy.
diva la futbol
i went to fico sports hub feeling sceptical we'd even score a single goal, seeing we were the youngest team in the tournament and that other players played for their school football teams. but what do you know, we topped our group :O and made it to the knockout stages after getting top 2 in the 2nd round group which consisted 2 other teams who topped their groups.
admittedly i was only screaming encouragement in the sidelines and didn't contribute much to the team (brander na scored a hat trick by the way). you know, we were so good we even impressed the nyjc and vjc (who's damn pro) and nus players! nyjc asked us to go to their school while vjc invited us to go for football trials next year :O nus invited us to play with them in the weekends :O
yay i can juggle much better with my new boots :)
in the knockout stages we were playing against vj and i knew we were out then. we lost 3-1, which is a respectable scoreline considering we scored 1 against them. hey, we were the youngest team and we made it into the last 16 of the diva la futbol CHAMPIONS cup (for the top 3 teams in the 1st round group). this translates to TOP 16 out of 48 TEAMS :O they were full-time pros playing for their schools with coaches and sponsors, while us, we were the 'come on friday if you want to' (quote by xw) people. HEH!!!!!!!!
but these achievements are quite hollow to me, as i know i didn't do much for the team. the goals were scored by brenda, brander and stacey. the shots were blocked by xi wen. the defence was taken care of by jingwen and hazel. me, on the other hand, was giving away possession and missing tackles etc. :( but i tell myself my goal is not to become a footballer but a pilot.
spent the rest of the afternoon in pizza hut playing cards and eating. on the mrt home brenda and i were talking about the episodes we watched on air crash investigation. she knows her stuff man. like me, she wants to be a pilot. :)

i think i'm going crazy...
look what i did in a moment of boredom:

the germany, france, spain and italy patterns are their jersey designs. admittedly i edited the germany one in fireworks cos we all know that there's no black pieces in rubik's cubes... wanted to make a switzerland design but i figured it'd look better in a 5x5, which i don't have. didn't bother to make a portugal one although it's easy to make, hehe.
i'm forcing myself not to take a nap as i want to sleep early tonight in preparation for the germany match.

football boots and arsenal jacket!
went shopping in queensway and bought a pair of black&white nike football boots AND an arsenal jacket!! :DDD the jacket rocks lah! i'm so going to bring it to france!
speaking of france i'm still worried about them. i read that domdom left out sagna not because he was injured! and clichy also! damn, everything'd've been better if they were playing... i was extremely impressed with sagna when i watched him playing for arsenal... i was thinking that france'd benefit a lot from him in the euro and then he's not in the squad! darn...
tonight is spain vs russia and tomorrow i'll be having a well-deserved break. cos i'm not watching group a matches. going to school tomorrow to try out my new boots :)

worrying about france
we couldn't score, we couldn't create, we fluffed the little chances that came our way. defending was alright but what's the point of having a good defence when you can't score and win the game? i was seething in front of the tv and tearing my hair in frustration.
it got worse. in the netherlands vs italy match, the former played so well and scored 3-0 i couldn't help thinking that if they could win italy 3-0 what would they do to france.
(lol in the post match interview domdom talked about the next match against the netherlands but as usual i couldn't catch what he was saying but at least i heard 'pays-bas' which means netherlands in french.)
i'm damn fucking worried about the netherlands vs france match and i dread to think of the result. but i'll be watching the match anyway. even though diva la futbol is on that day.
