sense, this post makes none

BAH i'm having mixed feelings.

they've just opened registration for those who want to go to bordeaux this year.

i.e. those who want to fly SQ to CDG
i.e. fly the A380 to CDG

BUT i can't sign up because:
1) they don't let ppl who're taking their o'levels to take part
2) my parents are saving up for my camera
3) what if SQ failed to replace all their CDG-bound T7s by november? then i'd be stuck on a 773 and kicking myself for being so stupid.

p.s. russian rhapsody rocks!!!! i'm listening to it now.

the a380 is cute, the 737 cool, and the a330 hot!!!

today i went to the airport to study/spot planes. turned out to be very fruitful as i've finished studying the nervous system and the eye! and i also did some maths homework. not to mention i saw the A380 thrice in various positions! #1 just arrived after landing on 02C; #2 was lining up to takeoff at 20R, #3 was taking off at 20C. AWESOME!!!

one thing that struck me about the A380 was that it's... cute. yes what with the round nose, fat body and thick wings, i think it's the cutest plane ever!!! it's such a gentle giant.

and the coolest plane award goes to... the B737!!! just look at its eyes and nose, don't they remind you of a raccoon?

and the hottest plane goes to the A330 - in SQ livery! too bad i didn't take a picture because i saw it in T2 and it's not the best place to photograph planes. when i saw it take off, the first word that came to my mind was... HOT!!! the A330 looks damn gorgeous in SQ livery.

okay so much for my personification of planes. here are some pictures i took in the airport. i won't bother uploading any to a.net because the quality is atrocious.

the A346 drops by to say hi. i think the thai airways livery makes it look like a hunchback :\
my feeble attempt at recreating an a.net shot of a similar composition.

this picture was supposed to be creative and artistic but i think it's neither.

okay, that's all! thanks for viewing!

flight

2 days in a row without a.net (mon, tues) left me gasping for air. i found myself feeling uneasy because i hadn't updated my album for 48 hours and i hadn't voted for a picture for the photographer's choice award. this addiction is unhealthy...

anyway, we had a list of 56 compo titles and we had to do 1 per week (weird, innit? seeing that a year has 52 weeks and the number of weeks between now and the o'levels is way less than that) and you know what? #10 is FLIGHT.  yep. write a composition about FLIGHT. well here goes.

Flight. For centuries, even milleniums, Man has dreamt of flying among the clouds in the skies. Even Greek legends tell of Daedalus making wax wings for himself and his son, Icarus, to escape from prison. But Icarus, carried away by his newfound freedom, found himself flying too near to the sun, which subsequently melted the wax holding the feathers of his flying contraption together, and he fell to an unsightly death.

An interesting but ridiculous myth. We all know that our arms cannot generate enough lift for us to fly. But the fact that this legend exists is proof that this huge thing called Flight has mesmerised people for ages. From the first sketches of a flying machine by da Vinci to the biggest airliner in the world, the Airbus A380, Man has been in constant pursuit to conquer the skies. Isn't it amazing to be able to soar like birds among the clouds and look at the world from a whole new perspective? Isn't it remarkable that we have managed to build a heavier-than-air machine that is able to glide through the air like a bullet, that is powerful enough to propel itself at speeds at up to Mach 0.89, and yet look as graceful as a swan?

Nowadays, with technological advances and the need for connectivity and speed, air travel has become an important form of transport, a way of life even. What was once a month-long journey has shrunk to a few hours, thanks to the invention of planes. In fact, flying has been such an everyday occurance that we take it for granted. Some even view it as a necessary chore.

The airlines have been doing their best to lure customers, coming up with things like bars, showers, even double beds on board their aircraft fleet. First and business class passengers draw a lot of admiration from everybody, but for me, as an aviation enthusiast, flying is not about comfort. It never was. Flying is the experience itself, the reassuring roar of the engines, the feeling of being thrown back against the back of my seat as the plane takes off, the sight of the world zipping by below me as we ascend to our cruising altitude of 36000 feet, the breathtaking view of cloud formations this time seen from above.

Inflight entertainment? What inflight entertainment? To me every plane has an IFE, and it is called the window. Next time you are on a commercial flight, forget about the movies; you can watch them when you're on the ground. Instead, pull up that window shade and admire the world outside. Watch the sunsets 36000 feet in the air, you won't see anything like that on earth. Sometimes you might meet another plane, its contrails trailing like smoke behind it. At night, watch the stars twinkle against the pitch black sky with no clouds to cover them because you yourself are above the clouds.

Appreciate flight, for it is one of the greatest miracles of the 20th century. It is something that cannot be compared with anything on earth. We'll let the great painter and inventor Leonardo da Vinci have the last words: "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."

sometimes i scare myself

adding photos to my a.net album has now become an obsession. i think i've added over 100 photos today. the number of photos in my album is now over 2000 and i'm still adding as i blog. haha. i'm really insane.

but you know what? people actually view my album! so far it has counted over 5400 hits (i swear, it's not me) and more than 540 people have viewed my a.net profile. i think they're really bored.

sometimes i come across an awesome photo and i add it to my album only to realise that i've already added it. it's scary. there was this a340 picture that i was so confident that i hadn't seen before, but it turned out that it was already in my album. actually, i'm not the crazy one on the site. someone had 40,000 pictures in his album. granted, he must have been on the site for years but 40000??!!

having said all that, i'm still adding pictures into my album.

epic fail, doc

that's right, i'm a failure. i'm failing in resolution #1, "use the comp only during the weekend". and i am NOT proud of it. for every extra minute i spend on the computer, i swear inwardly to myself. so far for this week i haven't used the comp only for yesterday. i kept convincing myself i had something important to do and it required the use of the comp. but somehow after doing what i needed to do i found myself surfing a.net and blindly adding pictures to my photo album (which has over 1900 photos)

my latest reason for being online is to learn shorthand. yeah, what a lame excuse. i am in fact here to waste my time. actually i don't even know how to waste my time. yeah here i am spewing crap again.

maybe i should waste time in a better way. like blogging about better things. like just now.
the motivational workshop was one of the better ones i've attended. partly because it involved the coach sharing his experiences as a trainee pilot in the air force, and also a screening of clips from the movie, Goal, which i didn't watch because it featured newcastle (i mean, come on...) i didn't watch goal 2 because the plot involved real madrid beating arsenal, which they didn't (we won 1-0 at the bernabeu by the way)

but the more important thing is that this workshop did what it was advertised for - it motivated me. oh yes i hear you guys going "what?! doc is actually saying this?! i don't believe it! it's soooo NOT doc!" but it's true. i won't go into details, but i am more motivated to, to use a clichéd phrase, strive for excellence and the like. AND i think i am getting more and more determined to achieve this pilot dream of mine as each day passes. this flying dream will never remain a dream.
