photography
today i went to the page one warehouse sale. i didn't really plan to buy anything, just to check out the sale and the books. to my delight, i unearthed gold, in the form of 'understanding exposure' by bryan peterson. it's a damn informative photography book, and guess how much it cost!
$5! a few days ago while surfing a photography forum one of the members recommended this book. and i found it! for five bucks~! it's fucking worth it, considering it's supposed to cost US$25 as printed on the book. one guy even asked me where i got it, but too bad for him every copy was snapped up! (but later on i found 2 hidden at the bottom of a pile of design books)
after that i went to marina bay to scout for locations to photograph the new year fireworks. went to the steps of marina square, the esplanade waterfront, singapore flyer and the marina barrage. it was tiring, walking here and there and especially under the unforgiving midday sun. as i scouted it suddenly hit me that i was going through all these trouble just for that 8 minutes of fireworks. it's unbelievable.
marina square - the esplanade and some trees block the skyscrapers. so although it's possible to photograph the fireworks, the background won't be nice.
esplanade waterfront - damn good view with nothing blocking the skyscrapers. merlion is visible and the wishing spheres on the water make a superb composition along with the fireworks. main problem - you'll need a wide angle lens to capture everything.
singapore flyer - stupid bridge and construction site ruin everything. 2nd floor same thing.
marina barrage - best spot to photograph is from the barrage itself. preferably from one of the shelters found along the dam. from there, you can capture the skyscrapers, esplanade, singapore flyer and the sea in a single frame. not forgetting the fireworks too, duh. the problem is 'choping' a shelter, as there'll be a lot of people there from 12pm onwards.
(note that the comments are for photographers, specifically those with lousy point and shoot cameras like mine (ie no wide angle lenses))
